Animals must be at least one year old and  have a calm temperament, be obedient, gentle, and have a positive social manner and disposition that works well with patients of all ages. 

Demonstrate proficiency in basic obedience. 

Registration and evaluation with Pet Partners, a national therapy animal organization. 

To work in hospitals, nursing homes or other medical facilities,  additional training may be required.
